Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the legendary birthplace of St. Francis. Although generally regarded as a religious destination, any traveler will appreciate the plethora of art, its magnificent medieval architecture, and indeed the natural beauty of this hilltop town.

No visit to Assisi would be complete without seeing the spectacular Basilica of St. Francis - the first stop of your private walking tour. Here, your guide will share stories of the life of St. Francis and give you an overview of the impressive Basilica, constructed in 1228. You'll notice the complex is comprised of two churches: the older lower church (Basilica Inferiore) and the Gothic upper church (Basilica Superiore), in both churches you'll find stunning frescoes decorated by renowned painters including Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti.

Continuing on, enjoy a stroll along via San Francesco as you make your way to Piazza del Comune. One of the most beautiful piazzas in Italy, the buildings flanking the square bear witness to Assisi's Umbrian-Roman and medieval origins. On the north side of the piazza, you'll pass by the Temple of Minerva, with its entire original facade still intact from Ancient Roman times and the magnificent Corinthian columns. You'll stop to discover a few hidden gems: the 17th-century Chiesa Nuova (New Church) built on the site of the home where St. Francis grew up, and then just down the alley to the left of Chiesa Nuova, the Oratory of St. Francis Piccolino, where the Saint was born.

Finally, walking down Corso Mazzini, follow your guide to Piazza Santa Chiara. Dominating this square - which offers sweeping views over the Umbra Valley - is the elegant Basilica of St. Clare. Dedicated to one of St. Francis' most devoted followers, the Basilica, with its facade of alternating strips of pink and white stone, houses the remains of the St. Claire in the crypt and the crucifix of San Damiano where St. Francis received his calling while praying.
