Some tie in with the ebb and flow of the moody coastal fog that blankets the city when it rolls in and the unstoppable sunny cheer that abounds when it dissipates. The city’s hilly terrain is another natural feature that’s sparked ingenuity to efficiently and safely navigate the sharp elevation changes. And the wildlife that calls San Francisco home, like the boisterous California sea lions around Pier 39 and Golden Gate Park’s bison herd, are natural-born entertainers. You’re in for south sea weather patterns at this indoor paradise.

A storm complete with thunder, lightning, and rain brews as you sip an island-inspired fruity cocktail from a tiki-glass in your seat by the lagoon. Through the intermittent showers, a boat floats into the lagoon, where a live band plays island jams. Take cover under the protection of the woven grass-pitched ceiling to enjoy a Polynesian-fusion meal where Spam and stir fry are on the menu.

One of America’s most memorable tiki bars, the Tonga Room and Hurricane bar feature a lagoon in the middle of the establishment. The National Park Service has regulated where and when bonfires can occur on the beach, but visitors are welcome to participate in the nightly celebration from March through October. Warming up around a blazing wood fire takes some of the chill out of the Pacific Ocean breeze while creating a primal yet comforting glow grounded in nature and community.

Insider’s tip: Once you’ve conquered all of the unique things to do in San Francisco, why not check out another side of the city by visiting our list of 9 Quirky San Francisco Sites? This city really is the gift that keeps on giving.

FAQ´s – Unique things to do in San Francisco

Are these unique things to do in San Francisco free or ticketed?

Many of the experiences listed are completely free, including the community staircases, Lombard Street, the Cable Car Museum, Golden Gate Park’s Bison Paddock, Pier 39 sea lions, and Ocean Beach bonfires. Others, like riding a cable car or visiting the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar, involve typical city costs – expect around $8 per cable car ride or cocktail prices of $18–$25 at the Tonga Room.

What’s the best way to get around to see these spots?

San Francisco’s public transport makes it easy to reach most locations. Muni buses, trams, and cable cars connect neighborhoods efficiently, and ride-share services are widely available. Some areas, like Lombard Street, Pier 39, and Golden Gate Park are also great to explore on foot. For staircases and hillside neighborhoods, wear comfortable walking shoes.

When is the best time of year to enjoy these activities?

Most of these experiences are enjoyable year-round, but spring through fall (April to October) offers the best weather. Ocean Beach bonfires are permitted March through October, while fog is more common in summer mornings. Fall often brings the clearest skies and fewer crowds, making it ideal for scenic walks and outdoor attractions.

Are these activities suitable for families and kids?

Yes, many of these unique things to do in San Francisco are family-friendly, especially the Cable Car Museum, bison viewing in Golden Gate Park, sea lions at Pier 39, and community staircases. Parents should note that some activities involve hills, stairs, or late-night settings (like the Tonga Room or bonfires), so planning around children’s ages and energy levels is recommended.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.takewalks.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Devour_Lisbon_Petiscos_and_Wine_Giulia_Verdinelli_010-resized.webp" alt="Several people stand in a circle, chatting and smiling outdoors.
