It marked the third year of the American Civil War. That same year, Charles Dickens founded the Arts Club in Mayfair, London. In addition, the International Red Cross was formed in Geneva. Photo credit: Barney Moss<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>longest escalator<\/strong> in the system is at <strong>Angel station<\/strong>, spanning about 60 meters (197 feet), while <strong>Hampstead station<\/strong> is the <strong>deepest<\/strong> station, roughly 58.5 m below ground. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There\u2019s a <strong>fake house fa\u00e7ade at Leinster Gardens<\/strong> that masks empty tunnels behind it \u2014 when the District Line was laid, two terrace houses were demolished, so the frontage was rebuilt to match the row, hiding the tube tunnels. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mark Wallinger\u2019s \u201cLabyrinth\u201d artwork<\/strong> decorates every station in the Tube (now 272 of them). At first, it may be intimidating and confusing about how to buy a ticket and which line or lines you need to take to get to your destination, but after a ride or two, you\u2019ll do everything as smoothly as a local.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Single_tickets\"><\/span>Single tickets<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The London Underground <strong>still issues  single-ride paper tickets<\/strong>, but they\u2019re pricey and best avoided. You\u2019ll have to queue at a machine to buy one and feed it through the gate each time \u2014 hardly ideal when locals are gliding past with a tap of their card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Oyster_card\"><\/span>Oyster card <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Instead, go Oyster<\/strong>! You can buy an <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/travel-information\/visiting-london\/visitor-oyster-card\"><strong>Oyster Card<\/strong> <\/a>at any Tube station and load it with credit (\u201ctop it up\u201d) as needed. The system automatically deducts your fare each time you travel, and it caps your daily or weekly spending, so you\u2019ll never pay more than you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Contactless\"><\/span>Contactless <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Or go fully contactless.<\/strong> If your debit or credit card has the contactless symbol, you can simply tap in and out at the gates \u2014 the same way you\u2019d use Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay on your phone or watch. Photo credit: Z_Explorer_<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_does_it_cost_to_travel_on_The_Tube\"><\/span>How much does it cost to travel on The Tube?&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike the metro systems in, say, New York, Rome, or Prague, where you pay a flat fee for a ticket and can travel as far as you like, the London Underground\u2019s pricing is similar to that of the metro system of Madrid and Paris: <strong>the cost of your journey&nbsp; depends on how short or long your journey is<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Zones_1-6\"><\/span>Zones 1-6 <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The metro system has zones, with Zone 1 being in the center of London and Zone 6 being on the periphery of the city:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Going from Leicester Square in central London (zone 1)&nbsp; to Notting Hill Gate (zone 1),&nbsp; for example, is very affordable.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you take it one more station, to Holland Park in zone 2, the fare will be slightly higher.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Going from Leicester Square all the way to Heathrow Airport (zone 6) is going to cost you a bit more.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fare_calculator\"><\/span>Fare calculator <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just tap your card at the turnstile and it will open and your journey has begun. If you get to the turnstile and have to stop and search for your card, you\u2019re just going to annoy a cranky Londoner and hold up their journey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do &#8211; stand on the right<\/strong>. If you don\u00b4t want to continue walking as you ride on the escalators and want to stand stationary, keep right, if you are walking, keep left. There\u00b4s actually a historical reason for this<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Escalator_etiquette\"> etiquette!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do &#8211; give up your seat. <\/strong>Consider other passengers and offer your seat to old people, pregnant ladies or anyone with reduced or limited mobility.
