It\u2019s pure monkey business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the wooden building on <em>Zeedijk 1<\/em> is, indeed, one of the city\u2019s oldest, the first registered caf\u00e9 in this location dates from 1991. So where is Amsterdam\u2019s <strong>oldest brown bar<\/strong>, then?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dedriefleschjes.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>De Drie Fleschjes<\/strong><\/a>:&nbsp;As it turns out, Amsterdam\u2019s oldest drinking locale can be found just behind Dam Square. Local lore has it that Rembrandt, Admiral De Ruyter and Spinoza opened it in 1650, but a historian recently traced its origins back even further, to 1619, when the owner was Barend van Someren, a painter and art dealer. Today,&nbsp;serves a wide range of&nbsp;<strong>jenever<\/strong>, a fine selection of&nbsp;<strong>local liquors<\/strong>, as well as&nbsp;<strong>specialty beers<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>wines<\/strong>&nbsp;in a&nbsp;<strong>historic interior<\/strong>&nbsp;that breathes&nbsp;<strong>Golden Age<\/strong>&nbsp;charm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafekarpershoek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Karpershoek<\/strong><\/a>: established in 1641 (and possibly even earlier), still features <strong>antique Delft blue tiles<\/strong>, a traditional sandy floor and a convenient location <strong>opposite Centraal Station<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The quaint and convivial <strong>De Dokter<\/strong> has been prescribing a cure for whatever ails its patrons <strong>since 1706<\/strong>. Packed with trinkets and plenty of <strong>historical character<\/strong>, \u201cThe Doctor\u201d is not only the city\u2019s third oldest <em>bruin caf\u00e9<\/em> but at 187 square feet, also one of its <strong>smallest<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Caf\u00e9 Chris <\/strong>(<em>Bloemstraat, 42<\/em>): is often called the oldest brown bar in Jordaan. The story goes that it opened its doors in 1624 as a beer house and that the builders of the nearby Westertoren came to collect their pay here, rubbing shoulders with Rembrandt, who lived nearby. But there is no evidence for this in the city records. In fact, the first registered drinking house at this address was in 1882. Today, there\u2018s also a twee terrace on one of Jordaan&#8217;s most charming canals.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Or admire the <strong>old liqueur vats<\/strong> behind the bar at the 129-year-old <strong>Caf\u00e9 Hesp<\/strong>, before heading out to its <strong>huge riverside terrace<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Many cafes used to operate as an off-license. The fourth-generation family-owned<strong> Caf\u00e9 Oosterling<\/strong> is one of the last, with a good selection of Dutch jenevers and other liquor sold from behind the same shop counter that was used to trade tea, coffee and spices back in 1735. Rumour has it that it\u2019s haunted. Harking back to the days when Catholicism was outlawed in Protestant Amsterdam, there\u2019s a (now closed-off) <strong>tunnel<\/strong> that runs from this former <strong>\u201cPapists\u2019 island\u201d<\/strong> to a <strong>secret church<\/strong> on the opposite side of the canal.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>wonderfully slanty<\/strong> wood-framed <strong>Caf\u00e9 de Sluyswacht<\/strong> started life as a <strong>lock keeper\u2019s cottage<\/strong> back in the 17th-century. Settle on the <strong>lovely terrace<\/strong>, which overlooks <strong>Rembrandt\u2019s former home<\/strong> and studio, or find a seat in its cozy split-level interior with <strong>views<\/strong> of the <strong>Oudeschans canal<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Caf\u00e9 Eijlders<\/strong> is a relatively recent fixture on Amsterdam\u2019s brown bar scene, but it was an important meeting place for the <strong>Dutch resistance<\/strong> during World War II, and its handsome <strong>1940s interior<\/strong> has retained its charm with stained glass, brass chandeliers, and dark wood furnishings.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Or head to <strong>Caf\u00e9 Lowietje<\/strong>, beloved by locals for its <strong>Jordaan folksong soundtrack<\/strong>, <strong>juicy meatballs<\/strong> and <strong>authentic 1950s decor<\/strong>, which once served as the set for the <strong>Dutch detective series<\/strong>, <em>Baantjer<\/em>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Step into a Canal District <strong>time capsule<\/strong> at <strong>Caf\u00e9 Brandon <\/strong>where the previous owners simply sealed up their caf\u00e9 when they retired to their upstairs home in the 1980s. Thankfully, the new owners kept everything as it was, including the billiards room, photos, furniture \u2013 and jazzy soundtrack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Insider\u2019s Tip: <\/strong>Not all brown cafes serve food\u2014many don\u2019t have a kitchen and just serve <em>borrelnootjes<\/em> (a type of nut snack) or boiled eggs, if anything at all.
