With its buildings and towers rising above the city\u2019s imposing surrounding walls, it is the historic heart of Bergamo. It\u00b4s history as a medieval stronghold and the four great gates to Citt\u00e0 Alta are still visible today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only will you be immersed in history as you wander the winding narrow streets, but also, you can shop in artisan boutiques,  relax in fun eateries and take in the great views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another thing that keeps the medieval feel is that Citt\u00e0 Alta is car-free. You can access it by walking up the winding streets of the Venetian walls from the trails in the surrounding Parco dei Colli. Or  you can  take a short funicular ride up the hillside. And one of the best things about Bergamo is its close proximity to another Italian gem &#8211; Milan. And why should you go to Milan as well? Well, let&#8217;s talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/is-milan-worth-visiting\">Why You Shouldn&#8217;t Skip Milan During Your Trip to Italy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Piazza_Vecchia\"><\/span>Piazza Vecchia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most iconic spots in Citt\u00e0 Alta is<strong><em> Piazza Vecchia<\/em><\/strong>, which is nicknamed \u201cBergamo\u2019s living room.\u201d  It is surrounded by historic buildings, such as <strong><em>Palazzo della Ragione <\/em>and <em>Palazzo Nuovo<\/em><\/strong>, and marked by the 17th-century <em><strong>Contarini Fountain<\/strong><\/em> in the middle. Rising above it all is the <em><strong>Campanone, or Civic Belltower,<\/strong><\/em> which has signalled 10 pm with 100 tolls for more than 360 years. It stands up to its name with modern architectural elements, especially by its bright white marble. This building is the home of the 18th-century Angelo Mai Civic Library, and houses approximately 600,000 volumes and more than 16,000 manuscripts among its stacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Santa_Maria_Maggiore_Basilica\"><\/span><strong>Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pass through the arches of Palazzo della Ragione in Piazza Vecchia to visit<strong> Piazza del Duomo, Bergamo Alta\u2019s religious center and home of the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica<\/strong>. Construction on the Basilica began as a votive to the Virgin Mary from the citizens of Bergamo in the hopes that a long period of drought would end. Attached to Palazzo della Ragione and located in Piazza Duomo, this massive church is not only a place of worship but an art gallery in its own right.
