Photo credit: Melissopetra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_sculptures_of_the_frieze\"><\/span>The sculptures of the frieze<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The frieze was located on the interior of the Parthenon&#8217;s colonnade, high above the ground, and it encircled the entire inner chamber (the<em> cella<\/em>) of the temple.<strong> It is a continuous low-relief sculpture, spun out like a 3D comic strip, that depicts the Panathenaic procession<\/strong>, a massive parade held every four years in ancient Athens to honor the goddess Athena.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The figures are depicted in various poses and activities, interacting with each other, with animals, with a remarkable sense of movement and life.
