The region boasts unique architecture, characterized by “baserris” — traditional Basque farmhouses made of half-timber or stone with timber painted in red, blue, or green.

When exploring the French Basque Country you’ll discover a tranquil hidden gem with endless beaches, ancient caves, historical sites, and a gastronomy that blends the best of the French and Basque cultures. The metro from the city runs directly to Hendaye, just across the border, where you can continue your journey by local trains or buses to Biarritz, Bayonne, or Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Renting a car is also a popular option, giving you the freedom to explore the region’s charming villages, beaches, and countryside at your own pace.

Public transportation between major towns like Biarritz, Bayonne, and Saint-Jean-de-Luz is reliable, but many of the most charming inland spots, like the Grottes de Sare or rural villages, are easiest to reach by car or campervan. The region is famously road-trip friendly, with plenty of scenic routes and well-equipped campsites.

How long should I spend in the French Basque Country?

While you can see highlights like Biarritz or Saint-Jean-de-Luz in a day, the French Basque Country is best enjoyed slowly. Most travelers stay 2–4 days to experience a mix of coastal towns, mountain villages, prehistoric caves, and scenic drives. If you love surf culture, hiking, or charming small towns, you might easily stretch it to a week.

What languages are spoken in the French Basque Country?

In the French Basque Country, people primarily speak French, but you’ll also hear Euskara (Basque), especially in smaller towns and rural areas.
