{"id":1882,"date":"2012-02-07T13:28:49","date_gmt":"2012-02-07T18:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cf-staging.takewalks.com\/blog2\/?p=1882"},"modified":"2023-06-28T04:20:03","modified_gmt":"2023-06-28T08:20:03","slug":"diego-rivera-in-nyc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/diego-rivera-in-nyc","title":{"rendered":"Diego Rivera in NYC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Diego Rivera<\/strong>, one of the 20th Century\u2019s most famous artists, was locked in one of NYC\u2019s most infamous culture clashes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2336\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2336\" style=\"width: 325px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/diego-rivera-in-nyc\/mural\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2336\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2336\" title=\"Rivera's Pneumatic Drilling\" alt=\"Rivera's Pneumatic Drilling\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/mural-600x763.jpg\" width=\"335\" height=\"424\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rivera&#8217;s Pneumatic Drilling<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Celebrated Mexican artist Diego <strong>Rivera came to NYC in 1931 to create murals for the new Museum of Modern Art<\/strong>.&nbsp; The works were showcased in the museum\u2019s second solo exhibition (Matisse being the first), which \u201cbroke all attendance records.\u201d&nbsp; While in NYC, <strong>John D. Rockefeller Jr<\/strong>. commissioned Rivera to create a <strong>large mural for the lobby of the RCA Building<\/strong>, centerpiece of the soon-to-be-completed <strong>Rockefeller Center<\/strong> complex.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rivera created a 63-foot-long portrait of workers facing symbolic crossroads of industry, science, socialism, and capitalism.&nbsp; Inspired by Communist ideals, he included Soviet leader <strong>Vladimir Lenin<\/strong> amongst the scene, which quickly stirred controversy.&nbsp; When Rivera refused to remove the image, he was paid, barred from the site, and his mural was covered by a drape.&nbsp; Soon after, despite plans to move the work to MoMa, Rockefeller Center workmen destroyed the mural using axes and hammers.&nbsp; Rivera never worked in the U.S. again.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1884\" style=\"width: 346px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/diego-rivera-in-nyc\/rivera-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1884\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1884\" title=\"&quot;Frozen Assets&quot; Diego Rivera\" alt=\"&quot;Frozen Assets&quot; Diego Rivera\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Rivera-2.jpg\" width=\"356\" height=\"447\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Frozen Assets&#8221; Diego Rivera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The exhibition, <strong>Diego Rivera: Murals for the Museum of Modern Art<\/strong>, focuses on <strong>works created in NYC<\/strong>, presenting them for the first time in nearly 80 years.&nbsp; Included are three murals of Depression-era NYC, as well as drawings and designs for his Rockefeller Center mural.&nbsp; See MoMa\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.moma.org\/interactives\/exhibitions\/2011\/rivera\/intro.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> website<\/a> for information and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moma.org\/visit\/calendar\/tickets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tickets<\/a>.&nbsp; The exhibitions runs through <strong>May 14, 2012<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One particularly striking work is the mural, <strong>\u201cFrozen Assets.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong> Below Manhattan\u2019s familiar skyline (including several landmark buildings) lie rows of the homeless and unemployed.&nbsp; Beneath them is a subterranean bank vault where wealthy citizens count their assets.&nbsp; It is a remarkably prescient work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rivera and the Rockefeller Center incident are depicted in the film<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0150216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Cradle Will Rock<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2337\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2337\" style=\"width: 315px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/diego-rivera-in-nyc\/acf2494\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2337\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2337\" title=\"Rivera &amp;
