public transit systems, the subway&#8217;s <strong>24 lines<\/strong> traverse Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx <strong>24 hours a day<\/strong>. \u00a0Given NYC\u2019s size and congestion, the subway is the by far the quickest and most economical way to traverse the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here are the tips you&#8217;ll need to easily navigate New York&#8217;s distinct color and number or letter to identify the route<\/strong>.\u00a0 Most lines run north-south through Manhattan (often directly below avenues) before branching into the boroughs. \u00a0Most lines have<strong> local routes<\/strong> (stopping at every station) and <strong>express<\/strong> (stopping at fewer stations, which are identified on the map with white circles).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8935\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-8935\" swiped through readers on the turnstiles for entry to the platforms.\u00a0 Metrocards are sold by vending machines found at station entrances.\u00a0 They accept payment by cash, debit, or credit card.\u00a0 The fare is <strong>$2.50<\/strong> ($2.75 for Single-Ride cards).\u00a0 Metrocards are sold by Value (i.e. $10, $20, $30, which is deducted per swipe) or Unlimited Rides (7-day-$30, 30-day-$112). \u00a0Note: Unlimited cards cannot be shared &#8211;\u00a0 there is an 18-minute delay between swipes.\u00a0 Pay-per-ride cards are sharable and can be swiped up to four times before the delay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Metrocards are accepted on both the subway and city buses. You get an automatic free transfer between subway and bus, or between buses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The MTA charges a $1.00 fee for new Metrocards.\u00a0 To avoid multiple fees, hang onto your card and refill it as necessary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Always get a receipt from the Metrocard vending machine. \u00a0The machines sometimes malfunction, charging you without producing a card. \u00a0The MTA won\u2019t process a refund without a receipt.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_the_Subway_Station\"><\/span>In the Subway Station<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While select stations have Information Booths staffed by MTA agents (particularly near tourist destinations), most stations are unmanned. \u00a0<strong>Subway maps and information are posted near the entrance<\/strong>, as well as on the train platforms.\u00a0 You can find all maps you may need on the <a href=\"https:\/\/new.mta.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MTA official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Read station signs carefully, noting the subway<strong> line and route, direction<\/strong> (Uptown or Downtown, Brooklyn, etc.), and <strong>local or<\/strong> <strong>express<\/strong> trains.\u00a0 In general, local trains run on the \u201couter track\u201d (close to the tunnel walls), and express trains run on the \u201cinside track.\u201d\u00a0 While waiting for the train, listen for system announcements, and always stand behind the yellow strip at the platform&#8217;s edge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many subway stations are equipped with cellular network access and free WiFi.\u00a0 Check <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mta.info\/nyct\/service\/WirelessServiceAtSubwayStations.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> for a list of WiFi-enabled stations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8933\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8933\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Suway-platform-e1410134977528.jpg\" alt=\"Subway platform, NYC\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Part of most New Yorkers&#8217; daily routine: the subway platform Photo: Jeff Dobbins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_the_Subway\"><\/span>On the Subway<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Trains stop briefly at each station, so it\u2019s important to <strong>enter and exit quickly through the doors<\/strong>. On crowded trains, this may require a certain level of assertiveness.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you cannot find a seat, <strong>hold onto the poles or railings<\/strong> (trains often lurch, turn and stop abruptly).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Be careful not to block other passengers\u2019 entrance or exit. (You may get jostled or shoved out of the way).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Newer trains have signage indicating the current or next stop, but it\u2019s advisable to watch through the train window as you near your stop. It&#8217;s not uncommon for train signage to indicate the wrong subway line.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">As you exit the station, <strong>read the signs carefully<\/strong>. \u00a0Subway exits are often spread out over several city blocks, and you could end up farther from your destination than intended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here&#8217;s a video we&#8217;ve created with lots of helpful tips on riding the subway, directly from New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to take the subway in New York City, tips from local New Yorkers\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4Yn8-eNLl3w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Subway_Safety\"><\/span>Subway Safety<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The subway is safe<\/strong>, and well <strong>monitored by surveillance cameras and police<\/strong>. There are few incidents of violent crime. The most prevalent crimes are pickpockets and &#8220;grab and run&#8221; theft of small electronics (i.e. mobile phones, computer tablets, iPods, etc.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Be aware of your surroundings and personal belongings.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Stand behind the yellow strip on the edge of the platform. According to the MTA, 141 people were struck by trains in 2012, 55 of them were killed. Always keep a safe distance from trains as they enter or exit the station.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">During off-peak hours, it is advisable to wait in the Off-hours Waiting Area (look for the yellow signs), which are monitored by cameras.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">At these times, choose the car with the conductor (you&#8217;ll see him\/her through the small train window), and avoid cars that are completely empty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Subway_Considerations\"><\/span>Subway Considerations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is less frequent service during off-peak hours (nights and weekends).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Check for weekend service interruptions<\/strong>. \u00a0These changes and delays are very common and could derail one\u2019s plans (especially for timely events like theater curtains and flight check-ins).\u00a0 Check the MTA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mta.info\/nyct\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> or <strong>call 511<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Given the age of the system, accessibility is an issue in the subway.\u00a0 While some station have elevators and escalators, stairs are most prevalent.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are <strong>no public restrooms<\/strong> in the subway system.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The subway is vulnerable to extreme weather, like heavy rain or snow. During severe storms, check for service interruptions before heading out.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The MTA has a Lost Property Unit. Unfortunately, with few manned stations, the chances of left items being turned in are pretty slim.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are several great mobile apps for navigating the subway system.
