The moat, the keep, the drawbridge, and the four spires all scream \u201cDisney.\u201d But was this the castle that inspired Sleeping Beauty\u2019s castle or Cinderella\u2019s fortress? Photo Credit: Disney<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the medieval Spanish castle was recently <strong>chosen by Disney <\/strong>as the location for the <strong>European premiere of the 2025 remake of the classic film &#8220;Snow White&#8221;<\/strong>. On March 12, 2025, Rachel Zegler performed \u201cWaiting on a Wish,\u201d at a special event with international press and fans,  in attendance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other pop-culture-related news, the castle served as the setting for the <strong>1965 Orson Welles\u2019 film \u201cChimes at Midnight.\u201d<\/strong> The castle was also used in the <strong>1960 American film \u201cThe 3 Worlds of Gulliver,\u201d<\/strong> serving as Brobdingnag. <strong>\u201cThe Wheel of Time,\u201d<\/strong> a recent American fantasy <strong>TV series from 2021,<\/strong> also relied heavily on footage of the Alcazar.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_Roman_Castrum_to_medieval_castle\"><\/span>From Roman <em>Castrum<\/em> to medieval castle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sitting on a rocky crag on the <strong>western edge of the old town<\/strong> of Segovia, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcazardesegovia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alcazar<\/a> is one of the most imposing-looking structures in all of Europe. In the early centuries of Moorish rule, the Berber Almoravid Dynasty <strong>built a fortress <\/strong>in the spot <strong>where the Roman fort had been.<\/strong> The fort may have been <strong>made mostly of wood,<\/strong> which is why there are no remnants of it today.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In the 12th century, <\/strong>Spanish-Christian King Alfonzo VI <strong>helped lead a reconquest,<\/strong> or <em>Reconquista<\/em>, of southern Spain. Segovia fell <strong>back under the Spanish monarchy<\/strong> again. Five years later, she would also become Queen of Aragon after she married King Ferdinand II. This <strong>united an enormous swath of Spain <\/strong>under one crown. Together, they were the <strong>first monarchs <\/strong>to be referred to as the <strong>\u201cKing and Queen of Spain\u201d<\/strong> and were nicknamed the \u201cCatholic Monarchs.\u201d <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In the 16th century<\/strong>, under the rule of Phillip II and during his marriage to Anna of Austria, the castle acquired its tall spires. Most remarkable, though, is an image of the Alcazar before it got its \u201cDisney-fied\u201d look with turrets and spires. You can also see an image of the <a href=\"https:\/\/catedralsegovia.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Segovia Cathedral<\/a> and <strong>how it looked in the 16th century.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are <strong>paintings of all 52 kings<\/strong> who had ruled from the Alcazar in the baroque Hall of Kings. In addition, <strong>period furniture and portraits <\/strong>of Spanish monarchs fill the interior rooms, and the Alcazar is also home to enough <strong>weapons and medieval armor <\/strong>to start a crusade. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once last tip: Don\u00b4t forget to look up at the plus-sized <strong>stained glass windows<\/strong>, and <strong>ornate ceilings<\/strong>. Buses run regularly to the centre of Segovia from Moncloa station, taking around 1 hour and 20 minutes. With trains from Madrid also taking about <strong>an hour<\/strong>\u2014give or take 10 or 15 minutes, depending on which train you take and which Madrid train station is is departing from\u2014it\u2019s <strong>very easy to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/devourtours.com\/blog\/top-10-travel-tips-madrid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>travel<\/strong><\/a><strong> to Segovia<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take note:&nbsp;The fastest option is the high-speed AVE train from Madrid Chamart\u00edn station, which takes about 30 minutes to the outskirts (Segovia Guiomar), but from there you will need to use local transport to get to the centre, unless you want to do a 5km walk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_does_it_cost_to_enter_the_Alcazar\"><\/span><strong>How much does it cost to enter the Alc\u00e1zar?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A full ticket (castle + museum + tower) costs around <strong>\u20ac10<\/strong>.  Reduced tickets (for children, students, seniors) are about <strong>\u20ac7<\/strong>.
