However, when the Arabs took over a vast swath of Iberia, including Andalusia, they introduced the<strong> <\/strong>process of making<strong> fortified wines.<\/strong> And &#8230; sherry was born!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be surprised to see a lot of <strong>English place names and company names<\/strong> while in Jerez, and the nearby towns of Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanl\u00f9car de Barrameda.\u00a0This is because over the following years, Great Britain became a <strong>huge market for sherry consumption.<\/strong> Therefore several wealthy <strong>British families<\/strong> ended up <strong>opening their own sherry cellars<\/strong> and<em> bodegas<\/em> (or wineries) in Jerez. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, <strong>Sir Francis Drake<\/strong> is credited with <strong>making sherry popular<\/strong> in England in the 16th century after raiding several sherry <em>bodegas<\/em> in Jerez. This happens by adding the <strong>sweet Moscatel and\/or Pedre Xim\u00e9nez grapes.\u00a0<\/strong> But it\u2019s a <strong>mistake to think that all sherries are sweet.<\/strong> They\u2019re not.
