So it\u2019s perhaps unsurprising that <strong>Amsterdam has its own Jewish Quarter, <\/strong>known as the Jodenbuurt, roughly clustered between the Waterlooplein, the Nieuwmarkt, and northern part of the Plantage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What might be more surprising, however, is that the city&#8217;s <strong>most famous Jewish resident,<\/strong> <strong>Anne Frank, did not live in <\/strong><a Museum<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> There, you\u2019ll get an <strong>overview of the history of Jews<\/strong> in the Low Countries from 1600 through to today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum\u2019s information and artifacts are <strong>grouped into four synagogues\u2013<\/strong>most of which are to be found in the Great Synagogue and the New Synagogue \u2013 which make for an impressive backdrop to an informative visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Local tip:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>entrance fee<\/strong> to the Jewish Historical Museum also includes <strong>entry to the three attractions<\/strong> below, as long as you <strong>visit all four within a week.<\/strong> Pick up an <strong>audio guide at all locations<\/strong> to learn more about what you\u2019re It still <strong>holds services for the Jewish population<\/strong> of Amsterdam, but when not in use it\u2019s open to visitors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you arrive after dark, the synagogue is often <strong>illuminated by hundreds of candles,<\/strong> creating a magical atmosphere. Then continue down Plantage Middenlaan until you reach the Hollandsche Schouwburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Once a popular theater, <\/strong>during World War II the <strong>Nazis used it as a deportation center<\/strong> for Jews. Later in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century, Ashkenazi Jews also made their way to the city from Central and Eastern Europe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jews in Amsterdam enjoyed a <strong>relatively tolerant environment<\/strong> in the early years compared with other parts of Europe.
