In 1604, French-born Samuel de Champlain<\/strong> became the first European explorer<\/strong> to navigate the lake that would later be called St. Louis (and Ontario). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He later wrote \u201cthere was a fall about a league wide and a large mass of waterfalls into said lake: that when this fall is passed one sees no more land on either side but only a sea so large that they have never seen the end of it, nor hear anyone who has\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Champlain was talking about what would later be called Niagara Falls,<\/strong> one of the most iconic cascades on the planet. The odd twist in all this is that Champlain didn\u2019t actually see the falls. <\/strong>His fellow explorers did and he reported it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
