In 1604, French-born <strong>Samuel de Champlain<\/strong> became the <strong>first European explorer<\/strong> to navigate the lake that would later be called St. Louis (and Ontario). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He later wrote \u201cthere was a fall about a league wide and a large mass of waterfalls into said lake: that when this fall is passed one sees no more land on either side but only a sea so large that they have never seen the end of it, nor hear anyone who has\u2026\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Champlain was talking about what would later be called <strong>Niagara Falls,<\/strong> one of the most iconic cascades on the planet. Other historians think the word is derived from the<strong> name of a local Native American tribe, <\/strong>the Niagagarega people, as has been listed on a handful of 17th-century European maps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from who did and did not see the falls and where the name comes from, there are many<strong> odd and unusual facts<\/strong> surrounding this great cascade. Across the Atlantic, Queens College in London was founded, the <strong>first school in the world<\/strong> to offer academic qualifications to women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And back in the United States, Niagara Falls <strong>fully froze over for the first time<\/strong> in recorded history. Not only did the water come to a halt, but <strong>also several industries,<\/strong> such as factories and fisheries. So did the tourist industry at the falls that day. All in all, there was <strong>not a trickle of water for about 40 hours.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The falls have only<strong> frozen over one other time<\/strong> and that was in 1961. This time, though, it was intentional. The US Army Corps of Engineers<strong> froze up the American side<\/strong> of the falls to inspect possible erosion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Niagara-USA_First-Boat_WEB-RES-Temp-0005-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"View of the Niagara Falls. \" class=\"wp-image-20479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Niagara-USA_First-Boat_WEB-RES-Temp-0005-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Niagara-USA_First-Boat_WEB-RES-Temp-0005-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Niagara-USA_First-Boat_WEB-RES-Temp-0005-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Niagara-USA_First-Boat_WEB-RES-Temp-0005.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Niagara Falls have only frozen over completely twice in recorded history. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_barrel_full_of_monkeys\"><\/span>A barrel full of monkeys<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Much has been made about the idea of <strong>going over the falls in the wooden barrel. <\/strong>The <strong>first person to do it<\/strong> was Annie Edson Taylor, a teacher from Michigan, who went over the falls on October 24, 1901. <strong>She survived<\/strong> but said this: \u201cNo one ought to ever do that again!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No one listened to her,<\/strong> of course, and since then <strong>handfuls of fools in wooden barrels <\/strong>have attempted Annie\u2019s cascade escapade, <strong>some have survived and some have not<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tightrope walkers<\/strong> have also been lured to Niagara Falls: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>first was Jean Fran\u00e7ois<\/strong> \u201cBlondin\u201d Gravelet\u201d who slowly but surely<strong> crossed Niagara Gorge<\/strong> on June 30, 1859. He enjoyed the stroll so much, <strong>he did it 8 more times<\/strong> during his life. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>last one to do it<\/strong> was American daredevil <strong>Nik Wallenda <\/strong>who crossed over on June 5, 2012. Wallenda claims his 1,800-foot-long walk was the <strong>longest unsupported tightwire walk in history. <\/strong>He <strong>brought his passport with him,<\/strong> so he could present it to border officials on the Canadian side.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But perhaps most telling of all are the <strong>early adventure seekers:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In Autumn 1829,<\/strong> an American man named Sam Patch thought it would be a good idea to <strong>jump from a tower<\/strong> overlooking the gorge and into the water. And the <strong>classic destination for newly married couples<\/strong> to go on their honeymoon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Niagara Falls has consistently <strong>captured the pop culture imagination.<\/strong> For example, it has played parts in the films <strong>Superman II, Bruce Almighty, and the Social Network.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It even appeared in Peter Jackson\u2019s <strong>Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring;<\/strong> in the film, there\u2019s a scene in which Boromir\u2019s boat is going over the Falls of Rauros.
