But it\u2019s only ominous if you hate art. <strong>Opened in 1974<\/strong> in an old munitions plant\u2014hence the name\u2014the Torpedo Factory Art Center hosts the<strong> largest collection of working artists<\/strong> (and their studios) in the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year about 500,000 visitors gravitate here to see artists in their studios and also to roam around the galleries. This particular building, though, was a <strong>steepled bell tower<\/strong> which also became the home of the region\u2019s Masonic Temple awards Hall.&nbsp;But this is no ordinary clock tower. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is <strong>home to the legendary devil bat.<\/strong> The beast was first mentioned generations ago when people began<strong> telling the tale<\/strong> of how a <strong>cadre of rowdy drunks<\/strong> were marching down King Street, throwing things and smashing windows. Seriously. The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is probably the <strong>most interesting<\/strong> <strong>pharmacy <\/strong>in the country, if not the planet.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Owned by a Quaker family\u2014no word if they sold oatmeal\u2014the <strong>pharmacy shut down<\/strong> during the <strong>Great Depression<\/strong> because patrons could <strong>no longer afford medicine<\/strong> and herbal concoctions.
