{"id":2069,"date":"2012-01-29T09:51:53","date_gmt":"2012-01-29T14:51:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cf-staging.takewalks.com\/blog2\/?page_id=2069"},"modified":"2024-11-08T07:19:21","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T12:19:21","slug":"nyc-buses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/nyc-buses","title":{"rendered":"How to understand NYC Buses: Tips from a local"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>NYC has an extensive network of bus routes<\/strong>, many serving areas without subway service.\u00a0 Generally, <strong>Manhattan routes run north-south along the avenues, <\/strong>and<strong> east-west along the island\u2019s major streets (Houston, 14th, 23rd, 42nd, etc.)<\/strong>.\u00a0 Crosstown routes are particularly popular since few subway lines cross Manhattan.\u00a0 Several bus routes cross the East\/Harlem River bridges, connecting the boroughs.\u00a0 Given the city\u2019s traffic and the number of bus stops (usually every 2-3 blocks), buses are <em>not<\/em> the quickest way to travel, but they can be a convenient option.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/nyc-buses\/nyc-bus-map\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2077\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2077\" title=\"nyc bus map\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/nyc-bus-map.jpg\" alt=\"nyc bus map detail\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a>Bus stops are located at street corners and have a<strong> tall, round blue sign with a bus emblem and route number<\/strong>. Most stops include a rectangular box attached to the sign pole that displays a\u00a0route map and schedule.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mta.info\/maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maps<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mta.info\/schedules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">schedules<\/a> can also be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/new.mta.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MTA\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Generally, <strong>buses run every 10-15 minutes during weekdays<\/strong>, with <strong>reduced service nights, weekends and holidays<\/strong> (approx. 20-30 minutes).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When a bus arrives, <strong>check the bus route displayed over its front windshield<\/strong> because several routes may share a stop. <strong>Enter through the front doors<\/strong>, beside the driver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bus <strong>fare is $2.25<\/strong>, payable with <strong>MetroCard or cash<\/strong>.\u00a0 Insert your MetroCard into the slot on the farebox, or feed coins into the larger slot (no bills or pennies, and <strong>exact change is required<\/strong> \u2013 drivers cannot make change).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To request a stop, <strong>press one of the yellow strips<\/strong> located between the windows or one of the <strong>red \u201cstop\u201d buttons<\/strong> on the grab bars.\u00a0 Exit through the rear doors.\u00a0 Once the bus has come to a stop, a green light over the doors will indicate they can be opened. In most buses you must <strong>press the yellow strip to open the doors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you paid with MetroCard, you can <strong>transfer from subway to bus (or vice versa) or intersecting bus routes<\/strong> within two hours for <strong>free<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you paid with coins, ask the driver for a transfer, which can be used for intersecting buses within two hours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All NYC buses are <strong>accessible to customers using wheelchairs<\/strong>.\u00a0 Certain seats are reserved for wheelchair users, and must be relinquished when required.\u00a0 Other seats near the front are reserved for the elderly or those with mobility issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/nyc-buses\/nyc-bus-stop\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2074\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2074\" title=\"NYC bus stop\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/NYC-bus-stop.jpg\" alt=\"NYC bus stop\" width=\"383\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a>Baby strollers should be folded before boarding the bus, and remain folded during the ride.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Read the bus maps carefully, as many routes turn or loop as they progress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bus route will be affected by street closures, which can be frequent due to parades, U.N. activity, and street fairs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>M60<\/strong> route travels from Broadway and 106th St to <strong>LaGuardia Airport<\/strong> in 30 minutes for a regular fare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For more information, see the MTA\u2019s website.
