And if all that exploring works up an appetite, be sure to check our list of great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/dining-in-harlem\/\">Harlem dining<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypl.org\/locations\/schomburg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 this branch of the NY Public Library is one of the <strong>world&#8217;s leading research facilities for African experiences and cultures<\/strong>.&nbsp; In addition to the research library and exhibits, the Center hosts events including <strong>discussions, theater and musical performances, and a film series. &nbsp;<\/strong>Check their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypl.org\/events\/calendar?location=64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">program schedule<\/a>&nbsp;for calendar and details.&nbsp;(And be sure and see the wonderful Aaron Douglas murals hanging above the main reading room).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.studiomuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Studio Museum<\/strong> <strong>in Harlem <\/strong><\/a>\u2013 Located on historic 125th St., this museum showcases <strong>works by artists of American descent<\/strong>.&nbsp; Besides its impressive permanent collection, the museum hosts <strong>exhibitions and programs<\/strong>.&nbsp; The museum is open <strong>Thursday \u2013 Sunday (Sundays free)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/explore-nycs-black-history\/mission-graphic\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2125\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"290\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/mission-graphic.jpg\" alt=\"Apollo Theater marquee\" class=\"wp-image-2125\" title=\"Apollo Theater marquee\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/apollo-theater-new-york\/\">Apollo Theater<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 the landmark theater that launched the careers of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Jimmy Hendrix, and the Jackson Five to name just a few.&nbsp; In addition to <strong>concerts, the raucous Amateur Night <\/strong>is back February 18.&nbsp; <strong>Theater<\/strong> <strong>tours<\/strong> are also available.&nbsp; The theater will host a free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apollotheater.org\/all\/details\/377-open_house_2_21_15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open House<\/a> February 21, 12-5pm, including performances and workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jazzmuseuminharlem.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>National Jazz Museum in Harlem<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; at this intimate museum, you can peruse exhibits, explore their library, and enjoy a vast CD and DVD archive. They also present a busy roster of <a href=\"http:\/\/jazzmuseuminharlem.org\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">performances and events<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rest_of_NYC\"><\/span>Rest of NYC<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/afbg\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>African Burial Ground<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 this Lower Manhattan site is the <strong>resting place of more than 15,000 free and enslaved Africans<\/strong> who were buried during the <strong>17th &amp; 18th Century<\/strong>.&nbsp; Discovered in 1991 during construction of a Federal building, a <strong>National<\/strong> <strong>Monument<\/strong> <strong>and Visitors Center<\/strong> now stands at the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynhistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooklyn Historical Society<\/a> &#8211; <\/strong>the Historical Society observes Black History Month with screenings of <em>The African-Americans: Many Rivers to Cross<\/em> (February 5) and <em>Brooklyn Boheme<\/em> (February 1, 8, 15 and 22), a book talk on the Underground Railroad with Eric Foner (February 17) and a lecture by Wes Jackson and Albert Johnson about the interactions between hip-hop and the literary world (February 25).&nbsp; Also check out their exhibition <a href=\"http:\/\/pursuitoffreedom.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Brooklyn Abolitionists\/In Pursuit of Freedom<\/em><\/a> and a replica of their rare copy of the Emancipation Proclamation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nycgovparks.org\/parks\/central-park\/events\/2015\/02\/09\/exhibition-the-migration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Central Park&#8217;s Arsenal<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; NYC Parks presents The Migration, a exhibition featuring works by more than 20 artists on the Great Migration and its impact. During this period, which lasted roughly from the onset of World War I until the 1960s, some 6 million African Americans moved north and west to escape the racial segregation and discrimination still prevalent well after the end of the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynmuseum.org\/visit\/first_saturdays.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Brooklyn Museum<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; The museum&#8217;s monthly First Saturday, a free night of music, film and other public programming, presents Black History Month: Living Legacy on February 7th. Highlights include music by Bilal and Water Seed; screenings of <em>Black Enuf<\/em>, <em>The Peculiar Kind<\/em> and <em>Soul Food Junkies<\/em>; and discussions with Kim Drew, founder of the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/blackcontemporaryart.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Contemporary Art<\/a>, and renowned spoken-word artist J. Ivy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/weeksvillehc.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Weeksville Heritage Center<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Weeksville was a <strong>village of free African&nbsp;Americans<\/strong> founded just after the abolition of slavery in New York.&nbsp; The community thrived during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and included schools, churches, newspapers, and benevolent associations.&nbsp; It also participated in anti-slavery activities.&nbsp; <strong>Three original Road Houses<\/strong> (1840s-1880s) feature exhibits, and during warmer weather the Center offers a roster of performances and cultural programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting video about Weeksville:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The City Concealed: Weeksville\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/3560208?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay;
