It also held profound historical significance as it<strong> physically united Manhattan and Brooklyn<\/strong> across the East River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It is a whopping 5,989 feet (1.825km) in length and soars 119 feet (36.27m) above the river. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Its two granite Gothic towers rise 276.5 feet (84.27m) above the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The roadway platform is hung on<strong> steel suspenders<\/strong> strung from four thick cables, each made of 5,296 galvanized steel wires bound together and anchored on both shorelines. The only way to reach the island was by boat, and the river sometimes froze solid, stranding commuters and isolating both cities.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>That same year, <strong>a plan for a massive bridge was approved<\/strong>. It was <strong>designed by John A. Photo credit: Museum of Photographic Arts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Construction took 14 years and claimed 27 lives<\/strong>, the first being <strong>Roebling himself who died of tetanus<\/strong> after his foot was crushed by a ferry (which, ironically, his bridge would put out of business). His son Washington Roebling then took charge of the mammoth project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there were <strong>great dangers working from the heights of the towers<\/strong> and cabling, it was the river beneath that was most hazardous. Men toiling in submerged caissons to create the tower foundations (44.5 feet deep in Brooklyn and 78.5 feet deep in Manhattan) often suffered from decompression sickness (aka \u201cthe bends\u201d). However, many newcomers to the city have no idea how to get there, when to go, or what else to do around the bridge. The earlier you go, the less people will be on the bridge. And the views of the city in the evening from the bridge are truly spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_access_the_bridge_on_foot\"><\/span>How to access the bridge on foot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your starting point, you can <strong>access the bridge from either the Manhattan side or the Brooklyn side<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you start on the Manhattan side, <strong>the entrance to the bridge\u2019s pedestrian promenade is found on the east side of City Hall<\/strong>. The closest subway is the <strong>Brooklyn Bridge\/City Hall station<\/strong> (<strong>4, 5, 6 or Z trains<\/strong>). Another option is the 2 or 3 to Park Place, and walking east through City Hall Park.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you start on the Brooklyn side, there is one main entrance as well as an <strong>underpass entrance on either side of the bridge<\/strong>. However, here are some suggestions on making the most of your time at this iconic landmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Make_a_day_of_it\"><\/span>1. Make a day of it <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can make an entire day of sightseeing by crossing the bridge early in the morning and then making the return trip in the evening, for sunset views or to see the city lights as it gets dark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Be_careful\"><\/span>2. Be careful <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Note the white line running down the center of the promenade. <strong>One side is designated for pedestrians (facing Brooklyn, on the right) and the other for cyclists<\/strong>. Also, note the date at the top of the Manhattan tower is 1875. At the Brooklyn-side tower, there are more plaques that point out sights visible along the Manhattan skyline. However,<strong> the incredible views from the Brooklyn Bridge<\/strong> are what you will most likely remember about your time here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>To the south are <strong>Governor\u2019s Island, the Statue of Liberty, <\/strong>and <strong>New York Harbor.<\/strong> To the north is the <strong>Manhattan Bridge<\/strong> (you may see the subway running underneath), and the <strong>midtown Manhattan skyline,<\/strong> including the<strong> Empire State Building <\/strong>and the <strong>Chrysler Building<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visiting_Brooklyn_Bridge_Park\"><\/span>Visiting <strong>Brooklyn<\/strong> Bridge Park<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After passing the Brooklyn tower, you\u2019ll see Brooklyn Bridge Park. There are<strong> spectacular views of the bridge and Manhattan skyline<\/strong> from both the Brooklyn Heights (south) and DUMBO (north) sections of the park. In fact, you could spend an entire day in Brooklyn Bridge Park. They turned walking the Brooklyn Bridge into an instant icon of the city.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1884, to prove the bridge\u2019s stability, <strong>P.T. Barnum paraded 21 elephants across the promenade<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On July 23, 1886, <strong>Robert E.
