It\u2019s also one that exemplifies urban renewal: SoHo (which stands for \u201cSouth of Houston,\u201d pronounced HOW-stin) transformed from a past of industrial squalor\u2026 into a vibrant artistic community\u2026 into today\u2019s neighborhood, one bustling with art galleries, exclusive boutiques, chic hotels, and trendy restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As its name states, SoHo is located south of Houston Street. That\u2019s just below Greenwich Village, for the uninitiated. Textile and dry-goods factories sprang up in their place. But industry left the area throughout the early 20th century. By the 1950s, the desolate neighborhood was known as \u201cHell\u2019s Hundred Acres.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In the 1960s, artists, who\u2019d been priced out of Greenwich Village, moved into SoHo\u2019s abandoned industrial lofts and converted them into art studios and homes. An avant-garde artists\u2019 community flourished, producing galleries, exhibitions, and performances of new theater, dance, music, and video.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Gentrification soon followed. All three can be found throughout the district. Built primarily between the 1870s and 1890s as factories and warehouses, these buildings feature impressive cast-iron decorative elements (like columns, cornices, and balustrades). The prefabricated pieces were created in molds at foundries and ordered by catalogue (sort of a 19th-century, industrial IKEA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pieces were bolted onto plain masonry facades and painted to resemble stone, a far quicker and cheaper process than actual sculpture. Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@diane_soko\"><\/a>Diane Picchiottino<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some of the finest buildings in the district include :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe Queen\u201d of Greene Street <\/strong>(<em>Greene Street, 28-30<\/em>): Built in 1872, make up a six-story warehouse with a large mansard roof and ornate dormers. It is surrounded by other cast-iron treasures in varying design styles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Haughwout Building <\/strong>(<em>Broadway, 488<\/em>): At the northeast corner of Broadway and Broome Streets, it\u2019s the oldest complete cast-iron facade in the city (1857). Ringed with 92 sets of arched windows and Corinthian columns, this historic building held the nation\u2019s first passenger elevator. Peek into the 2nd-floor windows to see the open loft floor plan and rows of interior columns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe King\u201d of Greene Street<\/strong> (<em>Greene Street, 72<\/em>): This grandiose structure was built the same year as \u201cThe Queen,\u201d and designed by the same architect, Isaac Duckworth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>80 Wooster Street:<\/strong> In 1967, this former warehouse became the site of the first artist co-op, leading to the transformation of the neighborhood. During its heyday, artists like Jonas Mekas, John Lennon, Philip Glass, and Andy Warhol all presented their works here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&nbsp;The Little Singer Building <\/strong>(<em>Broadway, 561<\/em>):<strong> <\/strong>This L-shaped building, with facades on Broadway and Prince St, is an early skyscraper (1903). Its terra-cotta sculptural details and wrought-iron tracery make it a standout.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&nbsp;The Cable Building <\/strong>(<em>Broadway, 611<\/em>):<strong> <\/strong>At Broadway and Houston St. (okay, not <em>quite<\/em> in SoHo, but almost), this ornate corner building, designed by Stanford White, was the terminus for cables that ran under Broadway, pulling the streetcars up and down the boulevard (like San Francisco\u2019s Cable Cars). The venerable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franklinbowlesgallery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Franklin Bowles Galleries<\/a> displays works by a few artists who you just might have heard about\u2014including Rembrandt, Matisse, Picasso, and Dali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other notable locations include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Artists Space: <\/strong>One of the city\u2019s oldest alternative galleries, it continues to support up-and-coming talent by including them in innovative group shows.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Drawing Center: <\/strong>This non-profit gallery showcases drawings in multiple mediums, often by emerging artists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AFA NYC:<\/strong> A gallery featuring conceptual animation art, often featuring beloved animated characters like those of Dr. Seuss or Charles Schultz\u2019s Peanuts in original works.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NY Earth Room: <\/strong>This 1977 experiential art installation features 250 cubic yards (197m) of moist, fragrant soil covering an entire loft floor, 22 inches (56cm) deep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Broken Kilometer: <\/strong>Another long-term installation (1979, this one features 500 brass rods, laid in five parallel rows across a large loft floor. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Morrison Hotel Gallery:<\/strong> This gallery features original photo prints of rock legends like Jimi Hendricks, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, and the Doors by some of the industry\u2019s most acclaimed photographers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Exclusive galleries out of your price range? The area is also home to numerous designer lighting and furnishings shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While stores are scattered throughout the neighborhood, Broadway, Prince Street, Spring Street, and West Broadway are the primary shopping thoroughfares. Photo credit: Yoav Aziz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fun_facts_about_SoHo\"><\/span>Fun facts about SoHo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>There are 26 city blocks and approximately 500 buildings in the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District, as designated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/lpc\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission<\/a> in 1973; the area was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Crosby, Mercer, Greene, and Wooster Streets are paved with distinctive Belgian blocks.&nbsp; In some areas, the surface is quite uneven.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Many painted cast-iron facades look so much like stone, architecture buffs sometimes carry magnets to identify which are metal or masonry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Many of the buildings bear the date of construction on their cornice (the top of the facade). Others feature plaques near the facade\u2019s base designating the iron foundry\u2019s name and date of production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Several loading docks, steps, and pavements are embedded with small, circular glass discs to allow natural light into basement warehouses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Broome Street is particularly wide (and full of traffic) because it is an important crosstown artery, connecting the Williamsburg Bridge and the Holland Tunnel. Robert Moses intended to build an elevated concrete expressway over the street, but his plan was thwarted by fierce public opposition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Spring Street is named for a natural spring at the location (in fact, it still runs beneath the street).&nbsp; A local legend says that a well, once located at Broadway and Spring, was the grave of Juliana Elmore Sands, whose body was found floating there in 1800. Her ghost has been seen in the area, notably in 1974 when a resident reported that the apparition of a woman in mossy garments emerged\u2026 from his waterbed.
