But the real bombshell was to follow!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Murray Hall was known as one of the toughest guys working for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tammany_Hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tammany Hall<\/a>, the corrupt political machine that \u201corganized\u201d New York City&#8217;s government for over 150 years. He was a \u201cward heeler,\u201d ensuring constituents got to the polls (sometimes with threats or violence) to keep Tammany\u2019s men in power. Hall was known as a heavy-drinking, stogy-smoking, womanizing brawler who\u2019d recently lost his second wife.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So imagine learning that he\u2026was a <em>she!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/murray-hall-tough-guy-with-a-twist\/w-murray-hall\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4533\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4533\" title=\"Murray Hall\" alt=\"Murray Hall\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/W-murray-hall.jpeg\" width=\"191\" height=\"495\"><\/a>Hall\u2019s gender was uncovered after he\/she died of breast cancer. To conceal his secret, Hall avoided doctors and instead purchased medical books, including <em>The Art and Science of Surgery,<\/em> to self-treat. At the time of death, the cancer had eaten almost to his heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Over the following two days, the <em>Times<\/em> printed testimonials by Hall\u2019s shocked acquaintances. &nbsp;They described him as a \u201cgood fellow,\u201d and \u201cman about town,\u201d who\u2019d \u201cplay poker or pinochle and was sweet on women.\u201d One admired how \u201che\u2019d line up to the bar and take his whisky like any veteran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Havelock_Ellis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Havelock Ellis<\/a> later claimed Hall was born in Scotland as Mary Anderson. She was orphaned very young and, \u201con the death of her only brother, put on his clothes and began working as a man.\u201d When her gender was discovered, she fled to the U.S. &nbsp;In the 1870\u2019s, Hall opened an employment agency with a woman known as his wife. The pair eventually parted because of his attentions to other women. Years later there was a second Mrs. Hall, who also quarreled with her husband over women. Together they adopted a daughter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Senator Bernard Martin, a close associate, remembered Hall had, \u201ca peppery temper and could say cutting things\u2026\u201d When drunk, Hall often became confrontational and was once jailed for slugging two policemen. Martin later said, \u201cSuspect he was a woman? Never. He dressed like a man and talked like a very sensible one.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4534\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4534\" style=\"width: 339px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/murray-hall-tough-guy-with-a-twist\/w-murray-hall-voting\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4534\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-4534  \" title=\"Murray Hall voting\" alt=\"Murray Hall voting\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/W-murray-hall-voting.jpeg\" width=\"349\" height=\"367\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4534\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Murray Hall, casting his vote&#8230; years before the 19th Amendment allowed women to vote!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Though Hall had a small frame and high voice, few questioned that his coats were a couple sizes too large. However in hindsight, some noted he never suffered from five o-clock shadow. Minnie, his twenty-two year old daughter, couldn\u2019t believe the news and only spoke of her father as \u201che.&#8221; Even Hall\u2019s buddies kept referring to \u201chim\u201d after the revelation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of Hall\u2019s cronies summized, \u201cSo, he\u2019s a woman, eh?
