Start at a place fundamental to the founding of Brooklyn (and even the nation):\u00a0<strong>Fulton Ferry Landing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ferries to Manhattan have operated here since 1642.\u00a0 This is where Robert Fulton\u2019s steam ferry began connections in 1814. This led to the growth of Brooklyn Heights as a residential enclave.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was also here, in 1776, that George Washington smuggled his defeated troops across the river. Photo: A Ruggeri<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The lovely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynbridgepark.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Brooklyn Bridge Park<\/strong><\/a> stretches to the south (to your left, if you&#8217;re facing the river) and includes lawns, cafes, restrooms, and events.\u00a0Continuing north is more waterfront park, plus the trendy neighborhood of <strong>DUMBO<\/strong>, where old warehouses and factories have been converted into art galleries, performance spaces, apartments, shops, and restaurants.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Old_Fulton_Street\"><\/span>Old Fulton Street<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2. Walk up Old Fulton Street and stop at the first corner (on the south side). The redbrick fortress before you is the <strong>Eagle Warehouse and Storage.<\/strong> This was once the site of <em>The Brooklyn<\/em> <em>Eagle<\/em>, the newspaper edited by Walt Whitman from 1846-1848. Whitman lived nearby, and his <em>Leaves of Grass<\/em> was first printed a few blocks from here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-460\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/grimaldis.jpg\" alt=\"A pepperoni pizza with fresh basil and melted cheese sits on a metal tray atop a red and white checkered tablecloth at Best Pizza in New York.\" width=\"334\" height=\"251\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The white cast-iron building on the corner of Old Fulton and Front Streets (look for the line of people outside) is the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/guide-to-nyc-pizza\/\"><strong>Grimaldi\u2019s Pizzeria<\/strong><\/a>, which some claim is New York&#8217;s best. Take a rest and try a slice, or two, and see if you agree that it is &#8220;The Best Pizza&#8221; in NYC.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Everit_Street_Columbia_Heights\"><\/span>Everit Street \/ Columbia Heights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3. Turn right and proceed on Everit Street (soon changing to Columbia Heights). Walk up the hill and under the bridge connecting two large yellow buildings. At the top of this former factory, you\u2019ll see the words, \u201cWatchtower,\u201d indicating it is the <strong>Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u2019 headquarters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Middagh_StreetWillow_Street\"><\/span>Middagh Street\/Willow Street<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">4. When you reach the top of the hill, turn left onto Middagh Street (which looks like more of a path, next to the playground), then walk to Willow Street. While the clapboard house at #30 dates to 1824. Built in 1820, the Federal-style house at #24 is believed to be the oldest house in the neighborhood.\u00a0Continue south on Willow Street (<em>the street numbers will increase<\/em>) and look for #37, one of the nation\u2019s first apartment buildings.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Be_Moonstruck_on_Cranberry_Street\"><\/span>Be Moonstruck on Cranberry Street<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">5. Turn left on Orange Street and walk a block and a half east to #57,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plymouthchurch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Plymouth Church <\/strong><\/a>(1849). Among those who came to hear Beecher were Mark Twain, Booker T. Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. In the adjoining garden, you can see a statue of Beecher and a relief of Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">7. Return to Willow Street and continue south (or left). The \u201cmodern\u201d building on the southwest corner is a <strong>Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses,<\/strong> one of 30 buildings the group owns in Brooklyn Heights.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Truman_Capotes_home\"><\/span><strong>Truman Capote\u2019s home<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2247\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2247\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2247\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/breakfast-at-tiffanys.jpg\" alt=\"Audrey Hepburn, dressed as Holly Golightly, sits at a table in Tiffany\u2019s, holding a cigarette holder and gazing forward.\" width=\"282\" height=\"387\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The iconic &#8220;Breakfast at Tiffany&#8217;s&#8221; was written in Brooklyn Heights.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In fact, this neighborhood has been home to many great writers, including Arthur Miller, W. H. Auden, Thomas Wolf, Carson McCullers, and Norman Mailer and Truman Capote.<\/p>\n<p>70 Willow St. was once <strong>Truman Capote\u2019s home; <\/strong>and it&#8217;s here that the author wrote <em>Breakfast at Tiffany\u2019s<\/em> and <em>In Cold Blood.\u00a0<\/em>This house sold for $12 million in 2012 &#8211; a bargain considering the original asking price: $18 million &#8211; setting a record for the highest residential sale in Brooklyn at the time.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Willow_Street\"><\/span>Willow Street<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The long block of Willow between Clark and Pierrpont Streets also features several notable homes. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">#102, the <strong>Danish Seaman\u2019s Church<\/strong> (a remnant of the area\u2019s busy waterfront)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">#108-112, ornate Queen Anne buildings with flamboyant terra cotta decoration<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">#151, a former carriage house converted into a luxury home<\/li>\n<li>and the Federal-style row houses at #155-159.\u00a0Look for the skylight in the pavement before #157, which once lit a tunnel leading from #159 to a stable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brooklyn_Promenade\"><\/span>Brooklyn Promenade<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">8. The construction of this highway (and demolition of historic homes) was the catalyst for residents\u2019 demands for landmark status, ensuring the neighborhood&#8217;s protection.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Herman_Behr_House\"><\/span>Herman Behr House<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">9. Return to Pierrpont St. and walk four blocks east, past beautiful 19th-century homes in a variety of styles. Number\u00a0106 has a unique Art Nouveau style, with stained glass over its bay windows and front door.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the intersection with Monroe Place, you\u2019ll find the imposing <strong>New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division<\/strong> (seemingly out of place in this residential neighborhood!) and the 1844 Gothic Revival <strong>First Unitarian Church<\/strong>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fuub.org\/home\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooklyn Chamber Music Society<\/a> performs here (an excellent way to see the church\u2019s Tiffany stained glass windows!).<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brooklyn_Historical_Society\"><\/span>Brooklyn Historical Society<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">10. At the corner of Clinton Street is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynhistory.org\/default\/index.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Brooklyn Historical Society<\/strong><\/a>, home to permanent and changing exhibits and an extensive library focused on Brooklyn and New York. The 1880 building has impressive interiors, and its fa\u00e7ade includes terra cotta sculptures of a Viking and Native American over the entrance, as well as busts of Columbus and Ben Franklin higher up.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_first_stained_glass_installation_in_America\"><\/span>The first stained glass installation in America<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4754\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4754\" style=\"width: 304px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/a-stroll-through-brooklyn-heights\/st-anns-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4754\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-4754 \" title=\"Church in Brooklyn Heights Brooklyn\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/St-Anns-2-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Brooklyn Heights church\" width=\"314\" height=\"416\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Ann&#8217;s Church in Brooklyn Heights. Here, you\u2019ll find the 1847 Gothic Revival <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stannholytrinity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church<\/strong><\/a>. It has a stunning interior of intricate sculpture and stained glass windows by William Jay Bolton (making it the first major installation in America). In addition to worship services, St. Ann\u2019s also has concerts and performances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Montague Street<\/strong> has always been the main commercial thoroughfare of Brooklyn Heights. The block north of Clinton St. includes three notable banks (all designed to appear monumental): #177 with a grand, vaulted ceiling, #183 resembling a classical temple, and #185 with intricate Art Deco relief work. Montague Street also is lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants\u2014great for a relaxing snack or meal.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cadmen_Plaza\"><\/span>Cadmen Plaza<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">12. Walk east on Montague to Court St. and <strong>Cadmen Plaza<\/strong>. Lining the plaza are the <strong>New York Supreme Court Building<\/strong>, the Victorian Romanesque <strong>General Post Office<\/strong> (and a statue of Henry Ward Beecher), and <strong>Borough Hall<\/strong>, which was Brooklyn\u2019s City Hall until the borough was consolidated into New York City in 1898.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From here, you can catch the <strong>2,3,4,5, N, or R subway lines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bonus_stops\"><\/span>Bonus stops<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Still have stamina? Walk west on Montague (toward the river) and take a left on Hicks St. to <strong>Grace Court Alley<\/strong>, which is lined by brick stables and carriage houses that have been converted to luxurious duplexes. Note the protruding metal hooks that once hoisted supplies to the second floors!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0B. From Hicks St., <strong>Joralemon<\/strong> is a cobblestone street descending to the river (as other west-bound streets did before being cut off from the waterfront by the expressway). This block is lined with modest Greek Revival row houses. Note the blackened windows of #58, which was gutted and serves as a ventilation chamber for the Lexington Ave. subway line tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>C. Numbers <strong>43-49 Willow Place<\/strong> are an 1846 \u201cColonnade Row\u201d that resemble an antebellum mansion.
