Back then, it was called\u00a0&#8220;Hurtig and Seamon\u2019s New Burlesque Theater,&#8221; and\u00a0featured bawdy stage shows for a whites-only audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After closing briefly, the theater reopened in 1934 as the\u00a0&#8220;125<sup>th<\/sup> Street Apollo Theater.&#8221; It featured concerts that were open to everyone, black and white, but especially designed to attract Harlem&#8217;s\u00a0African-American community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And it started with a bang. The first year, actor and producer Ralph Cooper brought his radio talent competition to the theater, calling it &#8220;Amateur Night at the Apollo.&#8221;\u00a0The first winner was a 15-year-old girl singer named\u2026 Ella Fitzgerald!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Over the years, Amateur Night has launched the careers of Pearl Bailey, Sarah Vaughn, Ruth Brown, Dionne Warwick, James Brown, Gladys Knight, Jimi Hendrix, the Jackson Five, and Lauryn Hill.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6103\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6103\" style=\"width: 621px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6103 size-full\" title=\"Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Show-Time-Apollo-Theater-631.jpg\" alt=\"Apollo Theatre New York\" width=\"631\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Show-Time-Apollo-Theater-631.jpg 631w, https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Show-Time-Apollo-Theater-631-600x285.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;The Executioner&#8221; performing during Amateur Night at the Apollo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Talents_whove_performed_at_the_Apollo_Theater\"><\/span>Talents who&#8217;ve performed at the Apollo Theater<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Music greats like Billie Holliday, Lena Horne, and the Count Basie Orchestra all made their professional debuts at the Apollo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Other legends who have played at the Apollo include Bessie Smith, Dinah Washington, Sammy Davis Jr., Josephine Baker, Nat \u201cKing\u201d Cole, Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (the song \u201cMy Girl\u201d was written backstage!), Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and Bob Marley.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The famed orchestras of Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, and Tito Puente have played at the Apollo Theater, and the theater&#8217;s \u201cBlues Nights\u201d have featured B.B. King, T-Bone Walker, and Odetta. Photo by Jeff Dobbins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Great dancers have taken the stage at the Apollo, too\u2014including the Nicholas Brothers, Bill \u201cBojangles\u201d Robinson, and Gregory and Maurice Hines.\u00a0 Comedians like Dick Gregory, Bill Cosby, Red Foxx, Richard Pryor, and Chris Rock have brought down the house.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_downturn_at_the_Apollo_Theater\"><\/span>The downturn at the Apollo Theater<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite its fame, by the early 1970s, the Apollo suffered the same decay and devastation as its neighboring Harlem neighborhood. In\u00a01976, it even became a seedy movie theater.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Fortunately, the theater was purchased in 1981 by the Inner City Broadcasting Corporation, received landmark status, and was reopened for live entertainment in 1985.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Apollo has since undergone an extensive renovation which continues today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The theater, now run by the Apollo Theater Foundation, continues to be the nation&#8217;s most important venue for emerging and established African-American and Latino performers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visiting_the_Apollo_Theater\"><\/span>Visiting the Apollo Theater<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The famed <strong>Amateur Night at the Apollo<\/strong> continues on Wednesdays at 7:30pm, March through October.
