Historical Significance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Underground Railroad, which provided a network of safe havens that helped enslaved people escape captivity, ran directly through the city. In fact, New York\u2019s stops became a crucial junction on the journey to freedom. And New York City was deeply divided between abolitionist and pro-slavery factions. Slave catchers roamed the streets, and free Black residents were at risk of being kidnapped. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 made assisting escapees a crime, forcing this network to remain hidden in secrecy.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While many of the \u201cstations\u201d of the railroad have been destroyed, you can still visit important sites of New York City\u2019s Underground Railroad.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Manhattan_Underground_Railroad_Sites\"><\/span>Manhattan Underground Railroad Sites<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"David_Ruggles_Home\"><\/span>David Ruggles\u2019 Home\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ruggles was the nation\u2019s first black journalist and a zealous abolitionist.\u00a0 He founded the New York Committee of Vigilance, an integrated group that protected blacks from slave catchers. His home on Lispenard Street was a hub of the antislavery movement and a refuge for runaway slaves. Photo: Jeff Dobbins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Theodore_Wrights_House\"><\/span>Theodore Wright\u2019s House<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Revered Wright, the first African American to earn a degree in theology, preached against the evils of slavery.\u00a0 He worked closely with Ruggles to defend black Americans, and his home was a stop on the Underground Railroad.\u00a0The building, built in 1809, is now an NYC Landmark (hosting a J. Crew boutique and liquor store). <em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>235 West Broadway, on the corner of White Street.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"143_Nassau_Street\"><\/span>143 Nassau Street<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This building once housed the offices of the New York Anti-Slavery Society, the first national organization of its kind. \u00a0Harriet Tubman sometimes stopped there to obtain train or boat tickets while escorting her \u201cpassengers\u201d to freedom.\u00a0Before 1905 this historic synagogue was the Willett Street Methodist Episcopal Church. In a corner of what is today the women\u2019s gallery there is an opening to a narrow shaft, and inside the a ladder leads to the attic, where fugitive slaves sheltered.<\/p>\n<p><em>7 Willett Street.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Abigail_Hopper_Gibbons_House\"><\/span>Abigail Hopper Gibbons House<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b> <\/b>The Gibbons family were prominent abolitionists and their home harbored runaway slaves. During the Draft Riots of 1863, an angry mob attacked and burned the house. Two of the Gibbons daughters narrowly escaped through the roof and onto the adjacent homes. Unfortunately, the current owner has defaced the original facade and erected a fifth floor penthouse. While he wrangles with the Landmarks Preservation Commission, the building remains a construction zone behind scaffolding.<\/p>\n<p><em>339 West 29th Street, between 8th &amp; 9th Avenues.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8245\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8245\" style=\"width: 791px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Plymouth-Pilgrims-Church-2-e1393113474777.jpg\" alt=\"Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims, Brooklyn. Photo: Jeff Dobbins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brooklyn_Underground_Railroad_Sites\"><\/span>Brooklyn Underground Railroad Sites<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Brooklyn, with its bustling port full of ships from the American South and free black residents, was an important nexus on the \u201cfreedom trail.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Plymouth_Church_of_the_Pilgrims\"><\/span>Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This progressive church was known as the \u201cGrand Central Depot\u201d of the Underground Railroad. The pastor was Henry Ward Beecher, whose dramatic sermons against slavery made him a celebrity. \u00a0His performances became so famous that \u201cBeecher Boats\u201d ferried devotees across the East River, including Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, and Abraham Lincoln. \u00a0Always a showman, Beecher staged mock slave auctions in the church, with the congregation bidding furiously to buy the captives\u2019 freedom. The street includes two 1840s houses that are believed to have been stations on the \u201cfreedom trail.\u201d The basement of 233 Duffield includes a capped well and exit shaft used when the house was \u201ca feeding station\u201d for escaped slaves. 227 Duffield was the home of staunch abolitionists Thomas and Harriet Truesdell, and its subbasement contains a sealed arch leading to a tunnel. The mysterious tunnel runs beneath Duffield Street and may have led to the Bridge Street African Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church, the first African-American church in Brooklyn and a known depot, two blocks away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>227 Abolitionist Place is now a small museum and cultural center.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Weeksville\"><\/span>Weeksville<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A free African-American community that thrived from the 1840s through the 1930s. By the 1850s Weeksville was home to more than 800 residents and had its own elementary school, orphanage, churches, benevolent societies, and abolitionist newspaper. \u00a0A census from the time shows that 30 percent of Weeksville\u2019s black residents had been born in the South. Today, the <strong>Weeksville Heritage Center<\/strong> is a museum featuring three historic homes, a research center, and cultural programs and events.<\/p>\n<p><em>1698 Bergen Street, between Rochester and Buffalo Avenues, Brooklyn.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Underground_Railroad_Memorials_Research\"><\/span>Underground Railroad Memorials &amp; Research<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Harriet_Tubman_Memorial\"><\/span>Harriet Tubman Memorial<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A larger-than-life bronze sculpture of the famed Underground Railroad conductor who sometimes brought her \u201cpassengers\u201d through New York City. There is an eight-foot bronze sculpture of Douglass as well as a fountain and granite blocks inscribed with biographical information and Douglass quotes. <em>Central Park North (West 110<sup>th<\/sup> Street) and Frederick Douglass Boulevard.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b>There is a life-size bronze statue of Douglass outside the entrance of the<b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyhistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> New York Historical Society<\/a>,<\/b> which offers exhibits, artifacts, and online research related to New York\u2019s Underground Railroad.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8247\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8247\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8247\" src=\"https:\/\/www.takewalks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Douglass-monument-600x375.jpg\" alt=\"Frederick Douglass Monument.
