Photo credit: Tony Hisgett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chapels_and_artifacts_Hidden_gems_of_St_Patricks_Cathedral\"><\/span>Chapels and artifacts: Hidden gems of St. Patrick&#8217;s Cathedral<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To tour the <strong>cathedral\u2019s chapels, <\/strong>follow the side aisles.&nbsp; Beginning in the <strong>far left aisle you\u2019ll encounter:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>7 sculpted relief panels<\/strong> lining the cathedral\u2019s north transept (the arms of the cathedral\u2019s cross-shaped floor plan) <strong>depicting the Stations of the Cross.<\/strong>&nbsp;These sculptures were first displayed at the 1893 Chicago World\u2019s Fair, where they <strong>won several prizes<\/strong> for artistry.&nbsp; The remaining 7 \u201cstation\u201d reliefs are found on the south transept.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Near the steps <\/strong>to the sanctuary is a <strong>statue of Saint Patrick,<\/strong>&nbsp; the patron saint of Ireland to whom the cathedral is dedicated.&nbsp; He is <strong>carrying a book of gospels<\/strong> and a shamrock in his left hand. Patrick used the <strong>three leaves of the shamrock<\/strong> to illustrate the concept of the Holy Trinity, and it became his symbol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Along the aisle <\/strong>behind the sanctuary is the Altar of Saints Michael (right) &amp; Louis (left).
