Discover a hint of Venice in Milan with a wander along Navigli canals

One of the most evocative neighborhoods in northern Italy is Milan’s Navigli canals. The canals were Milan’s main method of transportation, like Venice, with miles of them criss-crossing the city at one point. Now only two remain: the Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese. Discover both on this guided walk through this iconic district’s highlights.

Without the canals, the grand monuments and churches Milan is known for would never have been possible as they were used to transport large marble blocks. Milan is Lombardy’s capital city and its link with water goes back to the 12th century when the first shipping canal was built.

Today, this sparkling neighborhood is a delight to stroll at any time of day. The area is resplendent with restaurants, cafes, bars, and noble palaces reflecting on the canals’ water. On this tour, you’ll pass by Basilica of St. Eustorgio, an over 1700 year old early Christian church where it’s said the relics of the Three Wise Men are kept in an Ark. You’ll learn the stories of the canals’ construction and how they were used for commerce and transport from the Middle Ages until after Napoleon. You’ll visit a hidden gem of the area known as ‘Vicolo dei Lavandai’, or Alley of the Laundresses, a place frozen in time. Here, you’ll tour through the courtyard of a guard rail house (‘casa di ringhiera’), an example of traditional Milanese architecture characterized by communal living in the early 20th century.

Finally, no tour to the Navigli would be complete without an explanation of the best places to find the traditional Milanese aperitivo. The Milanese love to finish their workday with a drink, perhaps a negroni or a spritz, accompanied by free small plates and snacks popular at bars and cafes across the city — especially here in the Navigli neighborhood.
