Why take this online tour?

It is no coincidence the most famous proverb about wine is most widely known in Italian - “In vino veritas”. Portraits of Italy often include tired but true images of a country soaked in cultural class and style - an iconic monument of grandiose proportions, the Colosseum in Rome. A Sophia Loren beauty atop a swift-moving red Vespa as her Versace scarf performs its own version of the tarantella in the wind. But no image conjures up the country of Italy like that of its varied landscape - the soft green and gold hills of Tuscany and the terraced coastlines speckled with brilliant hues of color and sunlight. Italy is so agriculturally divine, how could we ever expect anything but the most perfect of wine? During this live online class, our expert Walks guide and Master Sommelier will introduce you to the most venerated and abundant product in Italy - il vino dell'italia, the wines of Italy.

This live online class is one part educational and one part cultural to make a completely engaging and amusing way to dive into a few barrels of Italian wine. Our local Master Sommelier in Rome will travel with you from their home in the Eternal City to yours, and into the world of Italy’s favorite pastime - making incredible wine of course!

Starting from the peak of Mount Ararat and into the belly of the Italian countryside, follow the path of the vine over the course of 8,000 years. What does Noah’s Ark, an Armenian cave, and Italian wine have in common? It is time for you to find out. Once we have arrived in Italy, evaluate the special classifications of terroir from the mountainous regions in the north, the volcanic western coast, and the sandy internal regions, all contributing to Italy's varied portfolio with over 2,000 kinds of grapes - 400 of which are used to make vino. This makes for a lot of really great wine!

Travel through Italy’s big three - Rome, Florence, and Venice as our expert Somm prepares you for drinking your way through the country, all in the spirit of research of course! This is the country of la dolce vita, the sweet life and dolce far niente, the sweetness of doing nothing. Yet “nothing” does not include drinking pale wine. Touch upon the quality classifications of Italian wine, how to choose a really great bottle during your trip or at your local store, and the surefire way to know if your wine is up to snuff. Really, what does that label DOCG really mean?

Novice? Come along! Drinker? We want your kind! Expert? Let’s mingle! This class truly has something useful and interesting for every level of wine neophyte to aficionado. If you are not feeling both educated and a little tipsy by the end of the class, we haven’t done our job!

Nota bene. This class is wine-friendly so it is encouraged to pour yourself a glass before joining - and during, and after if you wish!

By booking this online class, all participants will receive a curated list of our guide’s well-researched and highly recommended wines from Italy as well as a $25 gift voucher to use in the next two years in any of our Walks destinations worldwide. Need an idea? You may want to use it on this.

Expressing gratitude to your guide through gratuities has never been easier - now featuring an online tipping portal!
