Why take this online tour?

Nelson Mandela is known as Madiba to those he influenced the most. A homage to his clan name, and used as a gesture of deep respect and affection, this revolutionary individual changed the course of history from inside the walls of a small concrete cell. On this touching, relevant Spotlight Series broadcast live from Cape Town, South Africa walk along with individuals who were both in close proximity and served as Madiba's allies. Your guides will include Manfred Jacobs, a warden at Victor Verster prison, where Madiba spent the last 14 months of his 27-year-long incarceration and Moira Edmunds, whose tireless fight for Madiba's release as a then member of the ANC, and involvement with the Centre for Intergroup Studies earned her the honour of standing at his side on the terrace on his first public appearance on the day he gained his freedom. Each of your guides’ expertise comes directly from their personal relationship with Madiba.

Over the course of an hour, journey through the integral events of Madiba's historical path - from young activist and lawyer to anti-apartheid revolutionary, and subsequently as the first democratically elected black President of South Africa. It is with great honour that Walks has been granted exclusive access to Drakenstein Prison where Madiba spent the final 14 months of his 27-year long incarceration.

Your guides will reveal some of the stories from within the house where he was confined while a growing sense of his integrity and nobility of character sets in. As we journey through this incredible life and house, learn why Madiba was relocated twice before his release from captivity – from Robben Island to Pollsmoor to Drakenstein, hear of his conduct towards his captors and oppressors, and his sense of humour from insider memories and stories. See the table where both the terms of Madiba's release were negotiated as well as where the foundations of South Africa's new Constitution were first discussed. Touch on the various methods of communication Madiba adhered to, the "bugged" environment he lived within, and the “metamorphosis” of his captors from oppressors, to friends and admirers.

By the close of this very special Spotlight Series, our hope is "Nelson Mandela" will become Madiba for all who attend, for all who come in contact with these special guides, and to illuminate the humility and dignity Madiba displayed throughout his life making him an emblem of both courage and inspiration.

Thank you! This was a fantastic and interesting tour. The hosts were really engaged and given it was all virtual and they wouldn't be able to see us, was even more impressive.

Manfred was so knowledgeable. The house tour was well organized and informative.
