Discover the roots of the Gay Liberation Movement in Greenwich Village

In the early morning of June 28th, 1969, police raided a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn and inadvertently sparked a riot that would change the narrative of the LGBTQ community forever. On our tour through Greenwich Village, we take you back to that night, and the movement it spawned in the city and beyond.

With your local Walks guide, you’ll visit some now iconic gay bars along Christopher Street, and you’ll be introduced to the locations around which the city’s long-closeted gay community was finally able make itself public and unite for more rights.

As you make your way through Greenwich Village, you’ll take in the city’s oldest gay bar and other landmarks now on the National Register of Historic Places. As you pass by the AIDS memorial your guide will explain the devastation caused by the AIDS epidemic, and how the community banded together to overcome it.

We’ll stop by Big Gay Ice Cream, which serves both as a reminder of how far the community has come in the years since the Stonewall Riots, and as a beacon for a brighter future.

To end the tour, we’ll drop into Julius’ bar where you’ll be treated to a cocktail or beer of your choice and learn about the historic ‘sip in’ that took place in this very spot and changed the landscape of gay rights. If you’re not in a hurry, pull up a stool for a chat with your guide and group and get a sense of the inclusive atmosphere.
