Born and raised in San Sebastián with a passion for food, I’m a seasoned traveler who has explored the world and loves sharing the rich culture and hidden gems of the Basque Country with visitors. My goal is to make every tour both fun and unforgettable.
Q. What inspired you to become a guide?
Traveling extensively has shown me the value of having a knowledgeable local guide to truly experience a destination. While I still spend half the year exploring the world, the other half is dedicated to welcoming visitors to my hometown. I love meeting people from all over and sharing San Sebastián’s unique culture, history, and gastronomy in a way that feels authentic and meaningful.
Q. What do you love most about San Sebastián?
What I love most about San Sebastián is its incredible 'easiness'—a city where you can walk or cycle everywhere, surrounded by mountains, the sea, and one of the best city beaches in the world. Playa de la Concha, with its golden sand, clear waters, and stunning city views, is the perfect example of what makes this place so special. Life here revolves around being outdoors, socializing, and coming together over food and drinks. I’m also constantly amazed by how our gastronomy and wines continue to evolve, making San Sebastián a paradise for food lovers.
Q. What's your favorite story to tell on tour?
One of my favorite stories to share is how my love for food started at home. My mum comes from Rioja, Spain’s renowned wine region, and my dad is from Extremadura, known for its exceptional Iberian ham. Growing up, food was always at the heart of our home. This personal connection to Spain’s culinary heritage helps me bring Basque gastronomy to life for my guests during the tour.
I once cycled around the world for five years, sparking my love for connecting with new cultures and cuisines.
Before becoming a guide, I worked as an engineer for 18 years.
I’m passionate about movement in all forms—cycling, hiking, climbing, kayaking, yoga—you name it!
Q: Best time of year to enjoy San Sebastián?
For me, late summer and early fall are the best times to visit San Sebastián. The waves are perfect for surfing, the weather is warm and inviting, and the city comes alive with vibrant festivals. From the Basque Festival and Cider Day to the Kontxako Bandera rowing regatta, there’s something for everyone. And, of course, the International Film Festival adds a touch of glamour, transforming the city into a buzzing cultural hub.
Q: What do you tell friends and family visiting San Sebastián they have to see?
If a friend were visiting San Sebastián, we’d start the morning with a walk along La Concha Bay or a climb up Monte Urgull to take in the stunning views. Lunch would be a pintxos crawl in the Old Town, sampling the best local flavors. In the afternoon, we’d relax at Zurriola Beach and enjoy the sunset before heading to the Gros neighborhood for more pintxos, the best ice cream in town and the lively evening scene.
Q: What about the culture in San Sebastián should visitors not miss?
Every visitor to San Sebastián should experience the magic of a traditional cider house. It’s more than just a meal—it’s a celebration of Basque culture. Imagine gathering around rustic wooden tables, sharing hearty dishes like cod omelets and grilled steak, and toasting with cider straight from the barrel. The cry of 'Txotx!' signals the tapping of a new barrel, and everyone comes together to fill their glasses. It’s an unforgettable way to connect with local traditions and flavors.
Q: What are some typical foods and drinks in San Sebastián?
Cantabrian anchovies are my absolute favorite, in all their forms. Whether they’re marinated, salted, fried, or served as a simple pintxo with an olive and a green chili pepper (called Gilda), they perfectly capture the flavors of the Basque coastline. Their fresh, delicate taste always reminds me of the deep connection between San Sebastián’s cuisine and the sea—it’s a true local delicacy that I never tire of enjoying.
